Pitcher Scouting Reports

For all 43 games of the NECBL season, I worked extensively on scouting reports on all probable starters (those facing the Navigators).

Early on, the look and content of the reports changed, but, by the third week of the season, after communicating extensively with players and coaches about what they wanted to see, the format was finalized.

I provided the team with information on velocity, spin rate, induced vertical break, horizontal break, extension, release point, and release side, with simplified explanations of what these metrics meant in order to lessen the burden on the players in case they were unaware of what the numbers indicated. Utilizing Driveline’s pitch visualization feature, I would also generate a visual of the break of each pitch so the hitters could be prepared for the movement profile they would see.

On top of pitch shape metrics, I included usage rates (count-based, dexterity-based, situation-based) and location trends over time. Included in the scouting reports were videos of 15-20 pitches, so that the batters could have another mode of visualization and preparation.

This past season, a player on the Navigators started the year 1-29. When I had the opportunity to share my scouting information directly with the players, the impact was immediate. That very night, he went 2-3 with 2 extra-base hits. With continued access to the data I provided, he finished the season exceptionally strong.

Embedded below is an example of a scouting report I prepared this season.
